Claiming a gift

Somebody bought a year of membership for someone else. This is what the recipient goes through.

The email

The recipient gets a message saying who gave it, what it is, and any personal note. It contains one link.

The wording tells them the important parts: the membership runs for the paid number of months from the day they claim it, there is nothing to pay, no card is kept, and it will not renew by itself.

The link works once

Once used it is spent. If a recipient shares it and someone else opens it first, that other person gets the membership. Re-issue from Gifts if that happens.

Claiming

They open the link and get the membership. If they have no website account, one is created and they are emailed a link to set a password.

Before it ends

Shortly before the gift runs out, WordPress emails them an offer to continue at the normal price. If they do nothing, access drops to free Community. Nobody is charged automatically, because no card was ever kept.

When the recipient says nothing arrived

  1. Check Gifts in the admin portal. If it says awaiting claim, the gift is real.
  2. Press New link to re-issue, and send the address yourself.
  3. If several gifts are unsent, the problem is site email, not FMS. See gift emails.
